L’dor V’dor – 150th

L'dor V'dor - From Generation to Generation A year-long celebration of the 150 year storied history of Temple B’nai Sholom, its mission, its vision and its people and their impact on Huntsville, Alabama from 1876 to the present

For 150 years, Temple B’nai Sholom has been a home for Jewish life in Huntsville. Every generation has known a different congregation because every generation has lived in a different world. Yet each has found here a place to pray, to learn, to celebrate, to mourn, and to discover what it means to live a meaningful Jewish life.

When our congregation was founded in 1876, thirty-two Jewish families believed that Jewish life could flourish in Huntsville. They built more than a synagogue. They built a community rooted in Torah, sustained by worship, strengthened through lifelong learning, committed to justice, and dedicated to caring for one another.

The world has changed in ways our founders could never have imagined. Huntsville has grown from a small Southern city into the Rocket City, and Temple B’nai Sholom has grown with it. Through every generation, children have become B’nai Mitzvah, couples have stood beneath the chuppah, families have found comfort in times of loss, and our community has gathered to welcome Shabbat, pursue justice, and celebrate Jewish life together.

As we celebrate our sesquicentennial, we honor the vision of those who came before us while embracing our responsibility to those who will come after us. Inspired by their faith and guided by our enduring values of community, wisdom, justice, human dignity, and love of Jewish life, we look forward to ensuring that Judaism continues to flourish in Huntsville for generations to come.
